Applying English 112

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I have already needed to apply my writing skills that I have acquired in engligh 112. I have to write arguing a poisition paper in serveral other classes, and I noticed the work was consderably easier because I had already knew what I was doing, and simply had to do the research. Also all the work we did on research and MLA, makes writing other papers that require it much easier, because I already know what I am doing, and simply have to apply the knowledge. I have also found that Amanda’s teaching style has made our papers much easier compared to my friends who have found the same papers I have to do harder and they get lower scores on theirs. I end up helping them using the same point Amanda used, to help them better understand what they are doing. Synthesis also helps make my argument stronger because it shows that I really know what I am talking about and I am not just making it up as I go along. Overall I believe english 112 helped me more this semster since the english class where I learned to write. I believe if I had this class last semster I would have been more sucessful in writing my papers. I write my papers this semster with more confidence knowing I will get an A.

Source Analysis

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

From my source analysis , I learned how my sources could relate to each other on paper, and not just in my mind.  It helps becasue I am practicing how I can compare and contrast my sources and map out my synthesis. Basically it is a test run for synthesis and comparing and contrasting my sources. Some similarities between the source analysis and arugmenative essays are that they are making a point and using the body of the essay to dispute or refute the thesis, and then coming to a conclusion about the issue presented in the intodruction. Some differences between the two essays are that SA doesn’t really have a thesis and main points and isn’t trying to make a statement, it is really more of a tool for the writer to help better understand what they are going to be writng about and how they are going to go about doing it. Argumenative essays are trying to make a stance or point on an issue and persaude the reader to understand or choose the writers point of view, they are more argueing a point. SA are more a formal brainstorming tool on paper.  Although SA and argumentative essays are very much alike and have the same format, they are altogether different essays.

Proposal

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

I believe that the proposal helps a lot with writing this paper considering that it is such a big concept. This will help us so that we won’t lose our idea and our subject as we are doing research and have a goal of what we are trying to accomplish. I think students should write proposals for more papers because I think it makes writing a paper easier, becasue you figure out the basis of where the paper is going so that it is very solidly written and can get a better grade and be more successful in writing.

building a thesis

Monday, February 25th, 2008

1) This issue should be on people’s minds becasue this is a part of our everyday culture, and apart of how we look at the world around us. Statistics seem to catch peoples attention, and porbably if I relate what I am talking about to peoples everyday lives and how they view the world around them, then they will probably get a better understanging.

2)Many peopole suggest that the media has changed and that it has become more depressing and doesn’t show happy things about the world. This means that people are noticing a change but aren’t entirely sure why it changed or how it has changed.

3) I could read reseacrh article about chnges in our news media and also statisitics about media watching habits and how the public responses to the media. Those kinds of sources would help me further know what exactly I am writing about.

4) I don’t really have a thesis yet becasue I don’t know all of my casues just yet, so right now all I have is “The news media is losing its credibility mainly becasue they have publishing more and more soft stories. My thesis is still a work in progress and after some research i hope to get a better one written for my proposal.

Essay 2 vs. Essay 1

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

I hope to finally understand this sythnesis process, becasue i thought I understand it, but really I don’t think i really got it. I hope in my final draft I will better understand it. I also think i need to develop my ideas a little better and not ramble on and repeat myself. I need to make clearer ideas and use more examples and be more specific. That is what I need to improve on in Essay 2 and beyond.

The Writing Process

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I believe all authors in one way or another use the same writing process. Some processes as like the one described in our text is very detailed and drawn out. I am sure everyone in one way or another does this, but they probably simplify it alittle bit so that either they can understand it or it produces an essay that thier audience can understand. I use a simplified version of this process. I don’t use text notes becasue that confuses me. Also my brainstorming process is a little simplier then most students because after talking about something long enough can get an idea of where my stance is on something and what I want to write my paper about. From there, once I start writing everything just seems to come out and come together. This is part of the reasons I have to produce more then one draft because I usually have to organize all of my thoughts so that they make sense outside of my head. Overall I believe all writers use the same process just at different levels.

Synthesis

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

when decided what college to go to, a student forms in their own mind where it is they want to go. From that orginal list the student then reschearches they schools in places like “The Prince Review” or collegeboard.com. Then students can go visit these school to look at them first hand and talk to actual students that go there. Based on this many different outlets they can then support their intial decison. All these of course is based on where they are accepted. this is a real life example of synthesis.

Chapter 16

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Some issues becoming apparent are things like making connections between to articles. Also finding the right way to express the common themes through thesis. Chapter 16 makes you think a lot about what popular culture icons and theme are shown around you. It makes you think about what these images mean and how we are suppose to live our lives in society. Also brought up is how corporations want you to see the world around you whiether it is how things really are or not. Do Corpations use images that show the world realisitically, or not?

Revision

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

I plan to reread my essay and make the nesscary changes so that my essay can be at least an A level paper. A lot of the things wrong with my paper, were just things that if I reread my paper I could probably get rid of most of my mistakes. Also when I recieve my rough draft back I will fix all the grammatical and organization problems with my essay.

Criterion

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Once I stopped and thought about it I used criterion to decide where to go to college. I used criterion such as size, admissions standards, location and varitey of majors. I then compared what I wanted to what was out their and how each school stood against each critera. Once I got rid of all the schools that failed each critera then I ended up with the final couple which I applied to, then the critera became whichever one accepted me. This relates to the use of criterion in essay 1, becasue I have to choose certain criterion and apply them to the articles that we are writing our essays on.
